Personal сollections

The Jaroslaw Holowacz Collection at the Scientific Library of the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy (NaUKMA) comprises a unique collection of all language books and periodicals in forestry science and related fields that appeared between 1957 and 1990. It includes textbooks, monographs and compendiums of scientific articles, methodological materials, dictionaries, reference books, copies of newspaper and magazine articles as well as a card index of forestry publications, personalities, institutions and organizations.

This collection was built with great diligence and dedication by Jaroslaw Holowacz during his life in Canada. He sought to purchase all new Ukrainian and Russian books and periodicals in forestry science that appeared during this 33-year period and, if he was unable to do so, he acquired photocopies of such books, articles, and related materials. All of the materials in the collection are organically linked by Mr. Holowacz's own reference system. Every book contains the date he received it, his bookplate, and his signature. Most of the books have Mr. Holowacz's handwritten notes in the margins and signed dedications from scholars who presented these works to him.

In 1994, Mr. Holowacz’s widow, Sophia Zenna Holowacz, donated his unique collection to the scientific library of NaUKMA. In accepting the collection, the NaUKMA library agreed to Mrs. Holowacz’s request to prepare a catalogue of the 526 books therein. The catalogue was funded by Mrs. Holowacz and can be accessed in NaUKMA’s institutional repository.

As of January 1, 2024, the collection has grown to contain 5492 copies / 4269 titles. You can view and order copies of publications by searching for the donor's last name, "Holovach Yaroslav," in the "collection" field.

Also in 1994, Mrs. Holowacz established The Holowacz Family Fund at the Canadian Foundation for Ukrainian Studies with the main purpose of providing on-going support for the maintenance and development of the Holowacz Collection at NaUKMA (purchase of new books, periodicals, e-resources, appropriate equipment, etc.). Family members, Natalia Holowacz (1923-2004) and Stephan Holowacz (1949-2002) made additional financial contributions towards the Family Fund in 2004.

The Canadian Foundation for Ukrainian Studies is a national, non-profit charitable body whose mission is to support the advancement of Ukrainian studies by funding research, scholarly contacts and publications, development of educational resources, and higher education, particularly in Canada.
