Bohachevska-Khomiak Marta

The Marta Bohachevska-Khomiak Collection comprises 868 items representing 806 titles. The collection primarily consists of publications on the modern history of Ukraine and Russia issued by leading international publishers and featuring research by prominent historians and political scientists. It also includes works of philosophy and fiction.
Among the holdings are Marta Bohachevska-Khomiak’s own scholarly works, including The Ukrainians in Eastern Galicia in 1848 (1967) and Sergei N. Trubetskoi: An Intellectual among the Intelligentsia in Prerevolutionary Russia(1976).
Particularly noteworthy is the section devoted to gender studies. In addition to published materials, this part of the collection contains unpublished documents, including conference papers and bibliographic materials.
A distinguished scholar of nineteenth and twentieth-century Ukrainian and Russian history, Marta Bohachevska-Khomiak was born in Galicia in 1938.
In the late 1940s, her family emigrated to the United States. She studied at the University of Pennsylvania and later at Columbia University. In 1968, she defended her doctoral dissertation on nineteenth-century Russian philosophical thought.
She taught at universities in New York, New Jersey, Washington, D.C., and Harvard University. She directed a research programme at the National Endowment for the Humanities in Washington, D.C., and lectured on the history of Ukraine and Russia in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries at George Washington University.
An important aspect of Professor Bohachevska-Khomiak’s scholarly work has been the study of the history of the Ukrainian women’s movement. Her monograph White on White: Women in Community Life in Ukraine, 1884–1939 received the Barbara Heldt Prize of the Association for Women in Slavic Studies and the Tetiana and Omelian Antonovych Foundation Award in 1989.
Professor Bohachevska-Khomiak has also been actively involved in public and community work. She served as Vice President of the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America. During the 1997–1998 academic years, she taught courses on Ukrainian history at NaUKMA. Since 2000, she has headed the Fulbright Program in Ukraine.
