Borodin Vasyl – Chamata Nina

Vasyl Stepanovych Borodin (February 23, 1930, Pryliepy, Manturovo District, Kursk Region – June 21, 2011, Kyiv) was a Ukrainian literary scholar.
Borodin’s scholarly interests were primarily focused on the history of Taras Shevchenko’s texts and the censorship history of editions of the poet’s works. His book Three Poems by Taras Shevchenko (Kyiv, 1964) examined the poems The Owl(Sova), The Blind Man (Slipyi), and The Servant Girl (Naimychka) as a distinct stage in the development of the social and domestic narrative poem in Shevchenko’s oeuvre. A number of Borodin’s studies were published in proceedings of scholarly Shevchenko conferences. He was also one of the compilers of the six-volume Complete Works of Taras Shevchenko (Volumes 1–4 and 6, Kyiv, 1963–1964).
The collection was ultimately completed and donated to the NaUKMA Scientific Library by Nina Pavlivna Chamata, a distinguished Ukrainian literary scholar.
Nina Chamata was born on December 27, 1938 into the family of Pavlo Romanovych Chamata, professor and rector of the Kyiv Pedagogical Institute (now the Mykhailo Drahomanov National Pedagogical University). Her brother, Ihor Pavlovych Chamata, was a noted Ukrainian painter.
She holds the degree of Candidate of Philological Sciences and served as a Leading Research Fellow in the Department of Shevchenko Studies at the Taras Shevchenko Institute of Literature of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Since 1995, she has been a member of the International Research Group on Comparative Slavic Metrics operating under the Institute of Literary Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
Nina Chamata’s scholarly interests include literary theory, Shevchenko’s poetics and versification, the composition of poetic works, poetic genres, and textual criticism. Her academic output includes numerous substantial studies published in scholarly collections, journals, and the Ukrainian Literary Encyclopedia. She was scientific editor and co-author of the Ukrainian-Polish volume Na styku kultur: Wiersz polski i ukraiński – At the Crossroads of Cultures: Polish and Ukrainian Verse (2007).
She also served as a member of the editorial board and scientific editor of Volume 6 of the Shevchenko Encyclopedia, as well as author and scholarly editor of numerous entries devoted to Shevchenko’s literary works and biography, literary theory, and poetics.
As reflected by the academic backgrounds of its owners, the collection is devoted primarily to linguistics and literary studies. The collection comprises 3,903 items representing 2,813 titles.
