Donchyk Vitalii

The collection was donated to the NaUKMA Library in May 2018 by the scholar’s widow, Yevheniia Andriivna Donchyk. The collection is currently undergoing processing. As of January 1, 2026, it comprises 1,072 printed items representing 1,014 titles, as well as six folders containing the researcher’s personal archival materials.
The donor himself was a remarkable figure in Ukrainian literary scholarship. Vitalii Hryhorovych Donchyk was born on April 15, 1932 in Kriukiv (now part of the city of Kremenchuk, Poltava Region). He graduated from the Kyiv Specialized Boarding School with Advanced English Studies and, in 1956, completed his studies with distinction at the Romance-Germanic Department of the Faculty of Philology of Kyiv University. His professional qualification was in philology, specializing in English language and literature.
From 1957 to 1962, Donchyk worked for the newspaper Literaturna Ukraina, first as a literary editor in the criticism section and, from 1960, as Head of the Department of Literary Criticism.
In 1962, he joined the Taras Shevchenko Institute of Literature. Between 1962 and 1965, he pursued postgraduate studies there. From 1965 to 1986, he worked as Junior Research Fellow and later Senior Research Fellow. Between 1986 and 1992, he headed the Department of Ukrainian Soviet Literature.
From April 1992 to June 1993, he served as Deputy Head and Chairman of the Commission for Humanitarian Affairs of the Kyiv City State Administration.
From June 1993 to September 1997, Donchyk was Chief Research Fellow of the Department of Twentieth-Century Ukrainian Literature at the Taras Shevchenko Institute of Literature. From September 1997 onward, he served as Head of the same department.
In 1967, he defended his Candidate of Sciences dissertation entitled The Development of Analytical Principles in Contemporary Literature (Observations on Ukrainian Prose of the 1950s and 1960s). In 1983, he defended his doctoral dissertation, The Ukrainian Soviet Novel: The Development of Ideas and Forms (1941–1981).
From July 1989 to January 2000, Donchyk served as Editor-in-Chief of the journal Slovo i Chas (Word and Time), known until January 1990 as Radianske Literaturoznavstvo (Soviet Literary Studies).
In 1996, he was awarded the Taras Shevchenko State Prize of Ukraine for the two-volume textbook History of Twentieth-Century Ukrainian Literature.
