Eppel Veniamin

Veniamin Eppel (April 22, 1970 – February 18, 2013) was an engineer by training and a distinguished Ukrainian researcher. He worked at the Laboratory of Numerical Methods in Geotechnics at Kyiv National University of Construction and Architecture and served as editor and organizer of the university’s scholarly and technical journal Foundations and Footings (Osnovy i Fundamenty).
By vocation, however, Veniamin Eppel was also a linguist. He co-authored some of the first Russian-Ukrainian-English dictionaries in the fields of engineering geology, soil mechanics, and foundation engineering. He was also deeply interested in Ukrainian literature.
Among his most significant scholarly contributions was his painstaking work on a dictionary of Ukrainian pseudonyms. This research resulted in a number of publications, including New Materials for a Dictionary of Ukrainian Pseudonyms(1999), From New Materials for a Dictionary of Ukrainian Pseudonyms (2004), published in Vidkrytyi Arkhiv: Yearbook of Materials and Studies on the History of Modern Ukrainian Culture (Vol. 1, pp. 417–449), and Materials for a Dictionary of Ukrainian Pseudonyms (2008), published in the almanac Moloda Natsiia (No. 46, pp. 81–105).
