Zhytnyk Volodymyr

Volodymyr Kostiovych Zhytnyk (1938–2010) was a distinguished Ukrainian linguist, translator, and poet; laureate of the Maksym Rylskyi Prize for Literary Translation (1998) for his translations from Czech of works by Petr Bezruč, Jiří Wolker, and Zdeňka Bezděková; Candidate of Philological Sciences; Associate Professor; and lecturer at the Department of General and Slavic Linguistics of the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy.
He was born on November 28, 1938 in the village of Velyki Budyshcha, Poltava Region. He graduated from the Faculty of Philology of Taras Shevchenko Kyiv University and earned the degree of Candidate of Philological Sciences.
From 1968 to 1994, Zhytnyk taught at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, where he worked in the Department of Slavic Philology. In 1994, he joined NaUKMA and served as Head of the Department of Ukrainian Language until 2001.
He was the author of more than one hundred scholarly articles and translated from fourteen languages, introducing the works of fifty-six authors and translating more than three hundred literary texts. Among his principal scholarly works are Taras Shevchenko in Slavic Translations (Traditions and Prospects), Scholarly Foundations of Personal Textology (Based on the Works of Taras Shevchenko), Czech and Slovak National Revivalists and the Ukrainian Cyril and Methodius Brotherhood (Concepts of the Development of Slavic Nations, Their Languages and Literatures), and Slovenska literatura na Ukrajine.
